Glanzmann's thrombasthenia

Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia is an inherited bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency in, or dysfunction of, GPIIb-IIIa on platelets.

Patients with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia lack the ability to form a platelet plug, compromising the coagulation system.

  • Platelet transfusions have been the mainstay of treatment for bleeding episodes.

  • However, patients may develop antibodies to transfused platelets making future transfusions ineffective.
