Needle puncture: a growing concern

Accidental needle puncture wounds have become a growing concern among diabetes patients, relatives, healthcare professionals, and sanitation workers. These people are often exposed to contaminated needles, resulting in hundreds of thousands of needle puncture wounds annually.1

With all accidental needle sticks, there is a significant chance of coming into contact with biological material.3 In fact, needle stick injuries account for up to 80% of accidental exposure to blood.4 Furthermore, up to 80% of accidental needle puncture wounds happen while recapping – after the injection has been given.2

NovoFine® Autocover® reduces the risk of accidental needle puncture

Novo Nordisk has developed a simple solution to these problems with the new safety needle – NovoFine® Autocover®. This single-use needle prevents accidental needle puncture wounds while retaining all the benefits of other NovoFine® needles, including comfort, consistancy & effectiveness, and ease-of-use.

The NovoFine® Autocover® is fitted with a sliding shield. This shield covers the needle before injection, retracts during injection, and then slides back into place to cover the needle again, locking permanently into a shielding position following insulin delivery. Once the needle has been used, the safety lock indicator turns red to indicate that the shield is now locked. This effectively blocks any accidental needle puncture wounds as well as any re-use of the needle.

By eliminating needle protrusion, Novo Nordisk has potentially reduced one important parameter in disease transmission.
